Macadamia nuts are often counted as "real nuts", but strictly speaking they are a bellows fruit. However, we don't want to count peas, because what is certain is that macadamia nuts are simply incredibly tasty and were already very popular with the Aborigines, the indigenous people of Australia. This is also the origin of all macadamia varieties. Other countries where macadamias are grown today are New Zealand, South Africa, California and Hawaii. Due to the ideal climatic conditions, these are among the largest producing countries of the sweet nut fruit.
However, we have the German botanist Ferdinand von Mueller to thank for the fact that we call macadamia nuts by this name today. He named the nut after his friend and colleague John Macadam. How did it get its nickname "Queen of Nuts"? The cultivation of macadamia nuts is very demanding, which makes it very costly. So every time you buy macadamia nuts, you are buying one of the most expensive nuts in the world.
The world of macadamia nuts
The macadamia tree belongs to the silver tree plant family and reaches a height of up to 18 meters. In addition to the leaves, the flowers are cream or pink in color. The plant produces drupes that are just under 2-4 cm in size, which initially have a light green sheen and later turn dark brown. The fruit contains the hard, hard-to-crack stone seed, which contains the macadamia nut.
In addition to a subtropical or tropical climate, plenty of sunlight and high humidity, the macadamia tree requires high-quality soil and a lot of care. It then takes around 7 years before it bears fruit for the first time.
As soon as the macadamia nuts have reached the right ripeness, they are carefully harvested. This involves waiting for them to fall naturally from the tree, collecting them, drying them and carefully opening the hard shell. They are then processed and transported.
