Pulses and grains: quality that's just right

Since 1844, we have been dedicated to the manufacture and production of delicious snacks made from selected ingredients that are as natural as possible and end up on your plate, in your rucksack or in your snack bowl. In addition to cereals and pulses, we have a large selection of nuts, seeds and dried fruit to enrich your daily diet and keep you going throughout the day. While you can buy dried fruit or nuts from us, which are ideal for between meals, cereals and pulses are particularly good for preparing delicious dishes for morning, noon and evening. With us, you can rely on the highest quality, careful processing and sustainable production.

We focus on environmentally conscious action with cereals and pulses

As a family-run and internationally active company, we know how important sustainability is in everything we do. Whether it's the cultivation of cereals and pulses, processing, transportation or packaging - by balancing quality and progress, we ensure that we take care of the environment at every step and constantly reduce our ecological footprint.

Our sustainability strategy can be seen in our packaging: cereals and pulses are packed in bags made from a recycled material called recyclate. Around 70% of our product range has already been adapted to be environmentally friendly, meaning that we are already saving 20% on packaging material.

Our goals are ambitious and we want to reduce CO₂ emissions at our main site in Ulm by 10% by 2025 compared to 2019. The long-term focus is clearly on climate neutrality throughout our entire value chain. This means you can buy all kinds of natural ingredients, such as cereals and pulses, with a really good feeling.

It goes without saying that we treat our partners and suppliers of grains and pulses with honesty and respect. We also see it as our responsibility to ensure fair working and wage conditions.

Key facts about cereals and pulses

Regardless of whether you prefer grains, pulses or both - they are more than suitable as part of your balanced diet. You can also make ideal use of the versatile applications of grains and pulses to cope with today's demanding everyday life, in which there is often little time between meetings and power workouts.

What are grains?

Cereals are plants from the sweet grass family. Their seeds, the cereal grains, have been cultivated and used as food for many centuries. These include wheat, rye, barley, oats, maize, rice, millet and spelt. They are used in various forms, such as whole grains, flour, flakes or semolina. Cereals are particularly valued for their energy-giving carbohydrates, but also for their fiber and minerals such as iron and magnesium.

What are pulses?

Pulses are the seeds of plants from the papilionaceous family. The seeds develop in pods, which are even edible in some species. Classic pulses include lentils, many different beans, peas, chickpeas, soybeans and lupins. Just like cereals, pulses can be used in many different ways: as whole grains, purees, flour or fermented - think of tofu made from soybeans, for example. The high protein content should be emphasized, which is particularly beneficial for people who prefer a purely plant-based diet. But the fiber content is not to be sneezed at either.

What can you do with cereals and pulses?

To put it in a nutshell: a lot. Cereals and pulses can be prepared in a variety of ways, so there is something for every taste and hunger.

Cereals are traditionally used for freshly baked bread. Rye and spelt are particularly popular. Cereals also cut a fine figure as pancakes or semolina porridge. In oatmeal, cereal is your companion on the way to work or in muesli bars. Dishes such as couscous, which is made from wheat semolina, are also popular grain side dishes. And of course not to be forgotten: Pasta in its many forms.

Our cereal and nut tip: millet salad with roasted walnuts: Prepare millet according to instructions, toast walnut kernels, mix everything with fresh rocket and finish with a lemon-olive oil dressing.

Pulses are just as versatile as cereals. Lentil soup is undoubtedly a true soul food that provides pure happiness in the dark winter. On the other hand, chili con or sin carne, with or without meat, is deliciously hearty. Falafel, made from chickpeas and served in pita bread or tofu, also make a big impression on the plate. Creamy mashed peas are an excellent alternative to mashed potatoes.

Our legume and nut tip: Lentil curry with cashew nuts: Combine cooked lentils with a sauce made from tomatoes, spices and cashew paste and garnish with whole roasted cashews.

What you can expect from us in terms of cereals and pulses

In our range, you will discover cereals and pulses in the form of delicious lentils, which are a real (Swabian) specialty in combination with sausages and spaetzle as well as lentil soup. Alternatively, cereals and pulses include grains such as millet and maize semolina. The former is one of the oldest types of grain and was even considered a staple food in Germany until the rise of potatoes. Corn semolina, better known as polenta, is the ideal base for porridges or creamy spreads.

Neither cereals nor pulses? That works too! Two superfoods to include in your diet alongside grains and pulses are chia seeds and linseed. Both boast an impressive profile of fatty acids, protein and fiber and refine almost every dish - from breakfast cereal to dinner.

FAQ: Getreide und Hülsenfrüchte

Are whole grain products more nutritious than white grain products?

Whole grain products are made from the whole grain. As a result, they retain a greater variety of nutrients, including fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. With white grain products, some of the ingredients are removed, resulting in the loss of many of these valuable nutrients. For this reason, whole grain products are often considered more nutritious and beneficial.

Can grains and pulses be used as a source of protein in a vegetarian or vegan diet?

Yes, definitely. Grains and legumes are excellent plant-based sources of protein. A combination of both - such as rice and beans - can provide a complete amino acid profile, which is especially important for vegetarians and vegans.

Why do pulses cause flatulence in some people?

Pulses contain certain types of carbohydrates that are not fully digested in the small intestine. These carbohydrates then pass into the large intestine where they are fermented by bacteria, which in turn produces gases. Some people may be more sensitive to these gases and experience bloating.

How can the digestibility of pulses be improved?

Soaking pulses before cooking can help to reduce some of the hard-to-digest carbohydrates. In addition, draining the soaking water and using fresh water for cooking can also help. Spices such as cumin, fennel and ginger can also improve the digestibility of grains and pulses.

What distinguishes pseudocereals from real cereals and pulses?

Pseudocereals are plants that can be used in a similar way to cereals, but botanically do not belong to the same family. They are often gluten-free and can be a good alternative for people with gluten intolerance or coeliac disease. Examples of pseudocereals are quinoa, amaranth and buckwheat.
